HYBRID HEAD GASKET REPAIR & REPLACEMENT
If your head gasket fails, a variety of problems can occur, from compression loss leading to power reduction or a rough engine, to exhaust gases being forced into the cooling system, leading to the engine overheating and increased engine wear due to motor oil being mixed with antifreeze.
Coolant can leak into the cylinders, causing the exhaust to issue steam and damage the catalytic converter. If you are in need of a head gasket repair & replacement or need a hybrid diagnostic professional to determine exactly what the problem is, call the hybrid pros at Electron Automotive and we’ll have you back on the road in no time!
What Is A Head Gasket?
Most engines have two major components; the engine block and the cylinder head. These two components must seal to one another and act as one piece or the engine will fail. The head gasket is a sealing layer of durable material that is sandwiched between the cylinder head and engine block and when tightened down, the cylinder head crushes the head gasket into the engine block, causing the two to be sealed by force.
The head gasket ensures that no fluids enter or leave the engine, but extreme stress or even normal wear and tear can cause it to fail. You’ll know the gasket is blown if you start to see coolant leaking out of the engine.
Symptoms Related to a Bad or Failing Head Gasket
There are no symptoms when the gasket initially starts to fail. They won’t become recognizable until the leak has reaches an engine oil passage, engine coolant passage or the engine cylinder. Once that happens, you’ll notice that your hybrid runs rough while idling and the engine may be difficult to start. You may notice leaking coolant or oil and the engine will start running hot or overheat. If the oil in your oil pan looks creamy and lighter in color than oil, than coolant may be leaking into your oil pan. Your radiator may also start making a gurgling sound, you may notice engine oil and the smell of combustion on a regular basis.
At some point in time your “check engine” light will come on. When the head gasket fails completely, your engine will overheat within minutes, your vehicle will stall and the engine will not restart again. Driving a hybrid vehicle, or any vehicle for that matter, with a failing or bad head gasket can cause serious damage to other vehicle components. Stop driving your car immediately and call Electron to have your vehicle towed to our state-of-the-art hybrid repair facility in Orange, CA. Our ASE Certified Hybrid technicians use the very latest diagnostic technology, tools and equipment to determine exactly what the problem is. Once determined, they will walk you through the diagnostic reports in a manner that you can understand and review the repair/replacement options with you.
How Often Do Head Gaskets Need to be Replaced?
Head gaskets can fail at any time, but they typically last at least 100,000 miles if the oil and coolant are properly maintained. For a head gasket to stay in good condition, dirty/contaminated fluids should be replaced on schedule, and the engine should run at the proper temperature. Simply put, there’s no better way to help prevent head gasket failure!
